National Women’s Health Week
May 10–16, 2020
This dedicated week focuses on reminding women to make their health a priority at all times, but even more so during the COVID-19 outbreak. Taking care of yourself is especially important if you have an underlying health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, obesity or heart disease.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health recommends these steps:
- Talk to your health care provider about any health concerns.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Get regular physical activity.
- Eat heart healthy meals and snacks.
- Take care of your mental health.
- Find healthy ways to manage stress.
- Practice good sleep habits.
- Watch your alcohol intake and avoid illicit drugs.
- Quit smoking or vaping and keep your lungs healthy.
- Slow and stop the spread of COVID-19 while taking care of yourself.
Here are some additional tips for healthy living by age. Even if you feel healthy, be sure to see your primary care doctor every year for a preventive care visit and get your recommended screenings and immunizations. Many health conditions can be avoided or successfully controlled if caught early.
May is also National Osteoporosis Month
The National Osteoporosis Foundation states that one in two women over the age of 50 will break a bone due to osteoporosis. The good news is that osteoporosis is treatable and preventable. Learn more about osteoporosis. Every day in the month of May, you can do something to stay bone strong.
